The opportunity

The Board of Governors of the Royal School, Armagh is seeking to appoint an experienced and highly capable Bursar and Business Manager to provide strategic leadership across the School’s financial, operational, and administrative functions. This is a pivotal role within one of Ireland’s most historic educational institutions, offering a rare opportunity to influence long‑term development and ensure the continued success and sustainability of a thriving school community.

Founded in 1608 and located on a beautiful 29‑acre campus in the heart of the Georgian Cathedral City of Armagh, the Royal School is the oldest school in Northern Ireland and is renowned for its rich heritage, strong academic performance, and commitment to holistic education. With preparatory, secondary, and boarding departments, and an enrolment of over 800 pupils, the School combines tradition with innovation, maintaining exceptional standards in both academic and sporting achievement.

The Bursar and Business Manager will hold strategic and operational responsibility for a wide portfolio including financial planning and reporting, business development and marketing, support service delivery, estate maintenance and modernisation, HR management, and compliance, data protection, governance and risk management. The successful candidate will play a central role in shaping the School’s future, ensuring it remains well‑resourced, efficiently managed, and positioned to deliver an outstanding educational experience for generations to come.
